Kelli O'Hara and Nathan Gunn as Julie and Billy in the "Live from Lincoln Center" broadcast of 2013.
Class Preparation
- Read Chapter 4 ("Bustin' Out") of Purdum's Something Wonderful. Also read the part of Chapter 9 ("Beyond Broadway") about the making of the film of Carousel (pages 243-246).
- A few years ago, "Live from Lincoln Center" broadcast a "semi-staged" concert performance of Carousel starring Kelli O'Hara, Jesse Mueller, Nathan Gunn, and Stephanie Blythe. This performance is available on DVD/Blu-Ray and by streaming on Amazon Prime (free to Prime members). Audra McDonald provides a 30 second YouTube preview of “Carousel in Concert.” As I mentioned in class, the singing is wonderful in this not-fully-staged production.
- A May 27, 2020, NY Times article has links to a variety of renditions of "You'll Never Walk Alone," which people are finding particularly now. Article link

Additional Links for Carousel
- "You'll Never Walk Alone" is having a moment during the pandemic. This New York Times article has several links to performances--including one of a stadium full of Liverpool soccer fans singing full-throttle.
- "Press Reels" (40 minutes of filmed excerpts) from the 1994 Broadway revival directed by Nicholas Hytner, for which Audra McDonald won a Tony Award for playing Carrie. At 2:47, McDonald sings “Mister Snow” in its entirety. At 6:12. Sally Murphy (Julie) and Michael Hayden (Billy) sing two minutes of “If I Loved You.” At 8:31, Shirley Verrett (Nettie), sings “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over.” Other songs follow. At 22:46, there are excerpts from the national tour featuring Patrick Wilson as Billy.
- Louise's Ballet: Black and white film of complete DeMille choreography with members of the original cast and piano accompaniment. Speculation is that it was filmed to provide DeMille with a record of her work.
- Renee Fleming interviewed on playing Nettie in the 2018 revival. LINK
- Nathan Gunn sings “Soliloquy” from the NY Philharmonic Concert.
- Jessye Norman sings "You'll Never Walk Alone"
